After three days in Arizona, two Canadian riders emerged victorious in the Tucson Bicycle Classic. Canadian Olympian Ariane Bonhomme won the GC title. Maggie Coles-Lyster won the last circuit race, adding to her previous victory in the road race.

Bonhomme fights the numbers to keep the TT advantage

Arianne Bonhomme (The Cyclery Racing) took the lead at the start of the three-day Tucson Bicycle Classic. The Canadian used her skills on the track, where she represented Canada as part of the women’s pursuit team at Tokyo 2020, to take the lead in Friday’s individual time trial. From there, she and her Cyclery teammate Caileigh Filmer defended that lead against the biggest teams in the race.

Bonhomme finished third behind Coles-Lyster (DNA Pro Cycling) and New Zealand’s Rylee McMullen (InstaFund Racing) in the Stage 2 road race. In the final event, a circuit race, Bonhomme conceded four seconds from his advantage, finishing 10th, but retained the overall victory.

Coles-Lyster doubles stage wins

Maggie Coles-Lyster of Abbotsford, BC, won two out of three stages in Tucson. Like Bonhomme, she turned track success into open-road speed. The DNA Pro Cycling rider had a big impact on the UCI Track Champions League this winter in the sprint events. In Arizona, Coles-Lyster used his powerful acceleration to win the road race.

On Sunday, she repeated that result with a victory in the circuit race, finishing ahead of compatriot Holly Simonson (Red Truck Racing). InstaFund, a UCI Continental team based in British Columbia, returned to the podium, placing Heidi Franz in third position, just ahead of American mountain biker Chloe Woodruff (CZRacing/CycleHaus).

The pair of victories was enough to propel Coles-Lyster into second place in the GC, 13 seconds behind Bonhomme.

Holly Simonson (Red Truck Racing p/b Mosaic Homes) finished 11th overall after three days of racing. She was followed by Joséphine Péloquin of the French-Canadian continental team UCI Emotional.fr Tornatech GSC Blagnac VS31. Holly Henry (InstaFund Racing) and Kaitlyn Rauwerda (DNA Pro Cycling) in 17th and 19th place six Canadians in the top 20 in Tucson.
