Study finds e-bikes are the most popular and attractive electric vehicles
When we think of the term “electric vehicles,” we usually conjure up mental images of Teslas or other electric cars grabbing headlines. But a new German study from Deloitte shows that it is actually e-bikes that are leading the transition to electric transport.
The study was conducted by Deloitte last month in Germany, where 1,008 respondents said whether or not they used electric transport and, if so, what type.
By far the largest proportion of respondents said they use an e-bike, with 18% of the survey sample traveling by e-bike.
Next come electric cars (7%), electric scooters (7%), electric mopeds (3%), electric motorcycles (2%) and electric micro-mobiles (1%).
Interestingly, the study suggests that one of the reasons for the high use of e-bikes could be the higher perceived attractiveness of electric two-wheelers.
To determine the attractiveness of each form of electric vehicle, the study asked respondents to rate the attractiveness of different modes of electric transport on a scale of 1 (very unattractive) to 4 (very attractive).
Again, e-bikes came out on top. Electric bikes got an average ranking of 2.7, ahead of electric cars (2.6), electric scooters (2.2), electric mopeds (2.2), electric motorcycles (2.2) and electric micro-mobiles (1.9).
The study was further investigated to determine why respondents chose to rank certain vehicles with the greatest appeal. For e-bikes, the top attributes were practicability (62%), alternative to other vehicles (46%), durability (41%) and fun (37%).

The study results appear to align with previous reports we’ve seen that indicate an accelerating level of e-bike adoption.
The United Kingdom Bicycle Association recently reported that 160,000 e-bikes were sold in the UK in 2020. The group noted that with 108,000 e-car sales in the UK over the same period, e-bikes far outsold larger four-wheel electric vehicles.
According to data released by LEVA, the United States saw nearly 790,000 e-bike imports in 2021. This represents a 70% increase from 463,000 imports in 2020. Compared to 790,000 e-bike imports in 2021, the same year, Americans bought 652,000 electric and plug-in hybrid cars, according to BloombergNEF.
The e-bike boom in the United States has been spurred by large companies such as Rad Power Bikes which sell hundreds of thousands of e-bikes at bargain prices each year. Additionally, new e-bike startups have entered the market and helped drive prices down. Compared to Europe where a high-end e-bike often costs between $3,000 and $6,000, the United States offers many more value-oriented e-bike options, many of which start at $1,000 or less.
However, rising e-bike prices in Europe do not appear to have slowed sales on the continent. E-bike sales may have overtaken electric car sales in the United States, but in Europe they are on track to overtake sales of all cars – not just electric cars – later this decade.
And for many of the city’s residents, that day couldn’t have come sooner. In addition to providing a more affordable and efficient form of alternative transportation for cyclists, e-bikes actually help improve cities for everyone. While e-bike users can directly benefit from reduced transport costs, shorter journey times and free parking, more e-bikes on the streets means fewer cars. And fewer cars means less traffic.
E-bikes are widely considered one of the best ways to reduce urban traffic, especially in cities without efficient public transport systems. Even in cities with strong public transport, e-bikes are often more convenient alternatives because they allow cyclists to travel on their own schedules and without route constraints.
While e-bikes certainly can’t replace all car journeys, the growing number of e-bike styles and emphasis on e-bike utility means that a growing number of families are trading in a second car for a new one. electric bike.
